A Dayton man was charged after he allegedly rammed Kettering police cruisers while trying to flee a traffic stop.

Alexander R. Love, 24, is facing two counts of vandalism and one count of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, according to Kettering Municipal Court records.

On Jan. 23, officers attempted to stop a vehicle on East Stroop Road for running a red light at the Woodman Drive intersection.

Police noted the vehicle was swerving to the right to the point that its wheels were crossing the center dividing line, according to a police report. The driver, later identified as Love, was reportedly slow to stop, but not actively fleeing.

When the vehicle approached the area of the Stonebridge apartments it made a U-turn. The officer deactivated their emergency lights and did not pursue the vehicle.

Shortly after, other officers saw the vehicle turn north onto Woodman Drive. Police followed it from a distance as the driver obeyed traffic laws and additional crews responded, according to a police log.

When the vehicle entered the Shell gas station parking lot on East Dorothy Lane, police attempted to block the vehicle.

The vehicle intentionally backed into a police cruiser, causing extensive damage, according to the police log. When the suspect vehicle tried to go forward, it hit the door of a second cruiser.

Officers were able to take Love into custody without any additional incident.

When police asked Love if he saw the cruiser behind him that initially attempted the traffic stop, he said he thought the officer was trying to go around him, according to the police report.

One of the police cruisers had a damaged front bumped, headlight and hood from Love reversing into it. The second cruiser had damage on the driver side door.

Love’s bond was set at $50,000 last week, according to court documents. His next hearing is scheduled for Friday.
